Celebrating 12 years Service at Careys Manor

As we look back on the history of SenSpa we would also like to celebrate those involved in the journey over the past ten years. James Hiley-Jones began his role as General Manager at Careys Manor Hotel in August 2004, to coincide with the opening and launch of SenSpa. James’ experience in the hospitality industry stems back many years and in fact, he began his managerial career at Careys Manor as part of a trainee programme in 1993!

James was educated at Ditcham Park School in Petersfield before moving on to an HND to study Hospitality Management. During this period he learnt to be a chef, restaurant manager, studied marketing, sales, law, facilities management and more.

After completing his trainee position at Careys Manor in the early 90s, James moved on to cut his teeth at a series of 4 and 5 AA star hotels before taking the reigns as General Manager at Careys Manor’s sister hotel, the Montagu Arms in 2001.

During his time at the Montagu Arms, the hotel was awarded 3AA red stars, the highest level of service awarded by the AA, and the Courtesy and Care award for England, again by the AA.

“My love for food, drink and fine hotels were and still are the driving force behind my career. I was lucky enough to stay in some fairly smart hotels as a child when travelling with my parents. One I remember quite clearly is the Victoria Jungfrau in Switzerland which was so elegant and fascinating.”

James’ passion for hospitality echoes throughout Careys Manor and he attributes the hotel’s success to the staff, strong management and the forward thinking owners who had the foresight to invest in a state of the art spa in 2004.

“There is so much I have enjoyed over the past 12 years at Careys Manor from winning the 4th AA star to the great trading months, from the buzz of a major event finishing successfully to seeing members of staff promoted and guests returning time and time again”.

Now Managing Director at Careys Manor’s parent company Greenclose Hotels, James’s strives to continually improve what the hotel does and represents to maintain its title as one of the highest ranked 4 star hotels in the country.

In his spare time James enjoys spending time with his four children and is a keen road cyclis, completing the Prudential Ride London100 in August 2014. He raised money for the charity Scope.

In May 2015 James received the prestigious Master Innholders status, a title that bestowed just a handful of the most prominent, respected hoteliers around the country.
